Q: What inspired you to start Metastable State, what you call an AI-augmented music project?
A: I have a deep fondness for music and I collaborated with VICE for some years. What I do for a living is floating in that limbo between art, behaviour, and technology, then it seemed just natural to explore the possibilities of what AI could do in the realm of music production and music criticism.
Q: Can you tell us more about your project and the technical approach?
A: The idea behind the project is trying to explore the relationships between humans and machines in this particular artistic area. It is collaborative AI, I am not interested in seeing if human creativity or expertise can be replaced, I do not find it exciting. I am constantly experimenting with different algorithms and techniques to see what works and what doesn't.
Q: What challenges have you faced in using AI in music production and criticism, and how have you overcome them?
A: One of the biggest challenges I have faced is finding the right balance between human and AI-generated sounds and insights. I want to create music that is truly original and innovative, but at the same time, I want to make sure that the human element is still present and audible. I have spent a lot of time experimenting and fine-tuning the algorithms to strike the right balance and create a cohesive and engaging listening experience.
Q: What do you hope to achieve with your project?
A: I think its main purpose is being an outlet for me, the artists, and the algorithms to express ourselves. Also, the relationship between humans and artificial intelligence in the art field is mostly unexplored. AI technology has the potential to revolutionize the way art is created, allowing for more complex and sophisticated works. On the other hand, it could also lead to a decrease in quality, as AI algorithms may not be able to generate the same level of emotion and creativity that humans can. I am trying to get answers. But most of all, I want to observe what people feel when they deal with AI-enhanced stuff.
Q: What do you think the future holds for this type of technology in music?
A: I think the intersection of technology and music will continue to grow and evolve in the coming years, with AI playing an increasingly important role. I don't see yet a future where AI will be an integral part of the music-making process, but I believe AI will shape and transform the music industry somehow.
